Is DragonSword Awakening playable on Steam Deck?

Yes, according to a dated third-party preview-key test, DragonSword: Awakening was playable on Steam Deck through SteamOS before launch. The tester reports no launch failure in that session and recommends a tuned High-preset configuration for a balance of image quality and responsiveness.

Valve's store compatibility status remains Unknown at the time of this update. That means the game has not received a public Verified or Playable badge; it does not mean the game cannot run.

The video was published before the public Steam release and explicitly identifies the copy as developer-provided early access. Its numbers are observations from one preview build, not an official performance guarantee for the current retail patch. Results can change with SteamOS, Proton, game patches, thermal conditions and the exact Deck model.

The rationale shown in the test:

  • Effects was one of the more demanding options.
  • Normal View Distance retained useful visibility while returning a small amount of performance.
  • FSR looked and performed better to the tester than TSR in this game.
  • Built-in FSR frame generation fluctuated and added input latency in the tested scenes.

Start here, then cap the display according to the behavior you actually see. A stable lower target can feel better than an uncapped average that changes sharply between open terrain, cities and combat.

FSR versus TSR

The game exposes both TSR and FSR upscaling in the tested build. The source preferred FSR because TSR showed sharper edge artifacts around characters, while FSR Balanced appeared smoother without obvious severe ghosting in that session.

This is a visual preference from one test. Check hair, foliage, particle effects and moving silhouettes yourself. Upscaler quality can vary by scene and after an update.

Should you use built-in frame generation?

The test does not recommend the game's built-in frame generation on Steam Deck. The creator reports:

  • fluctuating output;
  • added input latency;
  • no reliable smoothness improvement;
  • some scenes performing better without it.

For a fast tag-action combat game, latency matters. Test native output first before enabling generated frames.

The video separately demonstrates the third-party Lossless Scaling application. That is optional external software, not part of DragonSword: Awakening or SteamOS. This guide does not treat generated “90 FPS” output as equivalent to native rendering, and it does not require buying that application.

Battery observations

With the creator's tuned settings, the source reports approximately:

  • 2.5 hours on Steam Deck OLED;
  • 1.5 hours on Steam Deck LCD;
  • about 3 hours 15 minutes on OLED when capped to 30 FPS.

Battery life is especially sensitive to brightness, volume, wireless use, battery health, TDP and scene. These numbers should not be treated as guaranteed runtime.

SteamOS and Proton notes

The test reports running the game out of the box on SteamOS without needing to select a special Proton version. The same narration also mentions Proton 11, but the exact client configuration is not fully documented in the source.

Use the default compatibility configuration first. If a later patch fails to launch:

  1. verify game files;
  2. update SteamOS;
  3. remove a manually forced compatibility layer and retry the default;
  4. check current Steam discussions and Hound13 patch notices;
  5. record the game version and Proton version before changing multiple variables.

Do not infer universal anti-cheat or offline behavior from a single session. The public Steam page confirms a Windows release, Steam Cloud and controller support; compatibility-layer behavior remains community-tested.

Controls and cloud saves

Before relying on cloud synchronization between PC and Deck:

  • close the game cleanly on the first device;

40–45 FPS

A practical OLED target when the tuned configuration stays within the source's observed range. Test the busiest content you currently play, not only the opening field.

60 FPS

The source reports medium or low settings reaching this range in lighter scenes, but not holding it universally. Do not plan around a locked 60 FPS without testing cities, boss effects and multiplayer content.

Current official boundary

The live Steam app data confirms:

  • Windows as the supported operating-system platform;
  • an official Unknown Steam Deck compatibility state;
  • DirectX 12 requirements;
  • 25 GB storage;
  • a strong recommendation to install on SSD because HDD use can cause longer loads, texture pop-in, framerate drops or crashes.
