DragonSword: Awakening – Gameplay Overview Guide
Updated 2026-07-24
Core Combat: Three-Hero Tag-Team Action
DragonSword: Awakening centers on swapping among three heroes mid-battle, combining their skills and status ailments to create combos. This is not a traditional single-character action RPG — you build a team of three and switch between them constantly.
How it works Each hero has up to 4 skills: 2 Active Skills and 2 Signal Skills. Active Skills are your standard attack moves. Signal Skills are powerful combo finishers that can be chained after you stack enough status ailments on an enemy. The official description calls this “Endless Signal Switching” — heroes weave in and out of battle through these switching signals, letting you craft your own stylish combat flow.
What to watch for
- You control one hero at a time; the other two are off-screen until you tag them in.
- Status ailments are the key to unlocking Signal Skills. Each of the 19 heroes has distinct status ailment abilities. Stack ailments with Active Skills, then use a Signal Skill to trigger a devastating chain.
- The combat is designed to be fast and visually flashy, with an emphasis on chaining rather than single-skill spam.
Open World and Exploration
The game is set in the Continent of Orbis, a fantasy world built with Unreal Engine 5. It is described as a “living, breathing open world” with a warm, anime-style art direction.
What you can do
- Explore on foot across meadows, secret cellars, deep seas, hidden caves, and dungeons.
- Travel with companions called Familiars — collectible creatures that aid you during the journey.
- Engage in side activities like Cooking (combine ingredients to create new dishes) and solving local residents’ problems. These are not required to beat the main story but add depth to the world.
What to watch for
- The open world is primarily single-player. Co-op is reserved for specific battle content (see below).
- The demo covered roughly 5% of the full game. The final release includes Chapters 2–8, new exploration zones, and additional hero and NPC quests.
Multiplayer and Co-op Content
Not all content is solo. Selected battle modes support co-op, while the story and open world remain single-player.
Co-op modes
- Subjugations – Normal boss dungeons, capped at 2 players. The developers found 3+ players made normal boss combat too chaotic.
- Raids – More challenging boss encounters, supporting up to 3 players. The first raid was originally designed for 8 players but was scaled down to 3 for the best experience.
What to watch for
- There is no item trading or player-to-player interaction beyond co-op combat.
- No plans for an arena mode, roguelike mode, or mod support at launch.
- Post-launch updates may add more raid designs that support larger groups, but nothing is confirmed yet.
Story and Progression
You play as Lute, a young boy traveling toward Orbis who becomes a mercenary alongside Johnny and Castella. The story is told across 8 chapters.
Estimated playtime
- Main story only: 10–15 hours (per the developers).
- Adding Hero Quests and regional Bond Quests gives you a substantial amount of additional story content.
- The full story completion is expected around 20 hours for average players.
What to watch for
- The game is a premium single-purchase title (no gacha). All 19 heroes are obtainable through gameplay alone.
- Difficulty rises automatically as you rank up, but you can manually lower it. There is no separate easy/core mode at launch.
- Post-launch content includes 4 new heroes (Ryza, Jerome, Veronica, Logan) and a Rift system for extra-dimensional combat.
Business Model and Editions
DragonSword: Awakening is a one-time purchase. No microtransactions exist beyond DLC.
Editions
- Standard Edition – $29.99. Contains the full game.
- Deluxe Pack – $19.99 as a separate Steam DLC. Adds the digital artbook, soundtrack, and the exclusive Familiar “Brave Baby Dragon.” The base game plus pack currently total $49.98 in the US store.
DLC
- Optional costume DLC is sold separately; check the live Steam DLC list for current names and availability.
- Familiar DLC (roughly one-third of the 30 Familiars are sold separately).
- All DLC is optional; you can fully enjoy the game without buying any.
What to watch for
- No in-game gacha elements. No additional payments beyond the initial purchase and DLC.
- Console versions are planned after the Steam launch, but no specific platform or date has been announced.
Post-Launch Roadmap (H2 2026)
The developers have shared plans for the second half of 2026, including four new heroes and system updates.
New heroes (all free, not paid DLC)
- Ryza – Shock-specialist. Throws her spear and teleports to it.
- Jerome – Knockdown specialist. Uses a massive greatsword and a multi-stage Grab.
- Veronica – Bare-handed combat + gun. Stun-based.
- Logan – Tank with a massive shield.
System updates
- Hero Quests – Side stories for characters not covered in the main plot (Othello’s quest first, then Ryza’s).
- Rift System – Dimensional combat portals that appear across the world.
- Quality-of-life improvements – Camera adjustments, lock-on improvements, better controller support, UI hide, photo mode.
What to watch for
- The roadmap is tentative; the team has shrunk and cannot commit to a fixed expansion schedule.
- All four heroes are planned to release by the end of 2026, but the order after Ryza is not yet finalized.
