DragonSword Awakening Teams – Build Your Tag-Squad
Updated 2026-07-24
You’re here because you want to understand how to build an effective team in DragonSword Awakening. This guide explains the official team-building framework; the separate tier list guide tracks which comparisons are supported by current release-build evidence.
The Party System: Three Heroes, One Combat Engine
In DragonSword: Awakening, a party contains exactly three playable heroes. This is your core team for all combat encounters.
- Hero Roles: Each hero has a distinct playstyle and specialises in certain Status Ailments.
- Tag Combat: The game emphasises switching between heroes mid-fight to chain Status Ailments.
The Official Tag-Combo Example: What It Shows
Hound13 published a tag-combo preview video on Steam Community, featuring Castella, Lute, and Aria. This is the only officially demonstrated team combination.
What the developer description says:
- Castella (Assault Vanguard) shakes the front line with Break and Stun.
- Lute follows up with Stun and Knockdown.
- Aria (loves firepower) stacks Fire and Airborne statuses with her bombs, then hands the offensive opportunity back to Castella.
What to watch for:
- The video shows a chain of status effects, not a single “best rotation”.
- Each hero applies a specific set of ailments. Castella opens, then Lute extends, then Aria add two different ailments.
- The final status (Airborne) is used to switch back to Castella.
Important note: This example demonstrates system interactions but does not prove a universal best team. This is a demonstration of possibility, not a recommendation to copy.
What This Means for Your Team Building
Instead of looking for a pre-copied “best team”, focus on the framework the video reveals:
- Identify each hero’s Status Ailments. Each of the 19 heroes has distinct Status Ailment abilities. Before building a team, check which ailments each hero can apply.
- Look for combos between three heroes. The official example stacks Break → Stun → Knockdown → Fire → Airborne. Your goal is to find a similar chain where each hero can extend the combo.
- Prioritise swapping. The system is called “Tag-Team Action”. The fun comes from weaving heroes in and out to keep pressure on enemies.
- Do not chase a single “meta”. Hound13 has never claimed there is a best team. Any claim you see online about a “perfect” line-up is speculation not supported by the developer.
Known Unknowns (What We Don't Know Yet)
- Exact unlock levels for each hero.
- Which Status Ailments each hero actually applies. (The video shows what the developers say each hero does in that specific preview; it does not list all possible ailments.)
- Specific combo activation conditions for any hero beyond the three shown.
- How “Signal Skills” trigger exactly.
- What happens when a hero is tagged out beyond the brief switch shown.
If you see a guide claiming to know any of these, treat it as speculation until confirmed by official sources.
Practical Advice for Launch Day
- Experiment freely. Your first playthrough should be about trying different three-hero combinations.
- Focus on ailment coverage. Try to ensure your three heroes together can apply a chain of different statuses.
- Use the tag mechanic. The game is designed for constant hero swapping. Do not stick to one hero.
- Check the evidence behind rankings. The tier list guide separates documented roles from untested launch-week claims.
Good luck, Mercenary.
