DragonSword: Awakening โ€“ Is It Free-to-Play?

Updated 2026-07-24

What Does Buy-to-Play Mean for DragonSword: Awakening?

DragonSword: Awakening is a buy-to-play (B2P) title, not a free-to-play game. The official Steam store page lists the app as is_free: false, and Hound13 Inc. has confirmed in their FAQ that the game is sold as a single package with no monthly subscription or pass. This means you pay once to own the game and access all its story content, open world, and progression systems.

The developer explicitly states: "DragonSword: Awakening is a B2P title, and we are not considering selling monthly subscriptions" (source: Hound13 FAQ). The game is designed as a "single-player package game" rather than a live-service gacha experience.

What Is Included in the Base Purchase?

All heroes, equipment, and progression materials can be obtained through normal gameplay. According to Hound13's FAQ: "All heroes and equipment in DragonSword: Awakening can be obtained through the story and in-game activities. You can grow your heroes and equipment using currency earned while exploring the world."

The base game includes:

  • A full story campaign โ€“ 8 chapters, estimated at around 20 hours to complete (source: AMA summary).
  • 19 heroes with unique abilities and status ailment mechanics.
  • Open-world exploration across the continent of Orbis, with hidden treasures, crafting materials, side quests, and dungeons.
  • Cooperative play โ€“ up to 2 players in normal boss dungeons (subjugation), and up to 3 players in raids.
  • Endgame progression โ€“ after level 40, you can upgrade skills, equipment, karma cards, and awakening passives without any cash gate.

A pre-release reviewer notes: "Everything gameplay related can be earned in game with the only paid extras as cosmetics. It doesn't constantly feel like it's trying to squeeze money out of your wallet every 5 minutes."

Are There Any Free-to-Play Elements?

No. The game is not free-to-play. You must purchase the base game on Steam. However, the developer has removed all gacha mechanics and pay-to-win elements from the original mobile version. The reviewer confirms: "What happens when a game studio takes a gacha game, removes the pay-to-win nonsense, removes the gambling mechanics, and turns it into a fully playable singleplayer action RPG. Well, that's basically Dragon Sword Awakening."

The cited developer material says the former gacha mechanics were removed and that heroes and equipment are earned in play. Steam currently sells optional Costume, Familiar and Deluxe Pack DLC.

What About DLC and Microtransactions?

Current optional purchases include:

  • Character costume DLC โ€“ separately sold outfits, with some packs also naming a weapon costume.
  • Familiar DLC โ€“ separately sold companions; this page does not assume they are purely cosmetic without a current description or test.
  • Deluxe Pack โ€“ digital artbook, soundtrack and the Brave Baby Dragon Familiar.

The developer explicitly states: "Separate costume and selected Familiar DLC do not make the base game free-to-play" (source: Steam announcement). The current purchase structure is a paid base game plus optional DLC. No cited source establishes that future story expansions will necessarily be paid.

Co-op and Post-Launch Content

Cooperative play is hosted by the room creator with no regional restrictions. Normal boss dungeons are capped at 2 players (to maintain clarity in combat), while raids support up to 3 players (source: AMA summary). There are no plans for item trading or player-to-player interactions.

The H2 2026 roadmap identifies Ryza as the first planned post-release hero. Steam now lists German, French, Russian and Portuguese-Brazil among the supported languages. Roadmap content should remain labelled as planned until a patch note confirms delivery.
