DragonSword Awakening Ancient Device: Missing Gear and Additional Control
Updated 2026-07-28
Quick answer
Installing the large gear-shaped component is only the first interaction in DragonSword Awakening Chapter 2. After recovering it from the Goblin route and placing it in the ancient device, remain beside the machine and use the additional control. The objective advances when the device reaches its active state, not when the component merely appears in place.
Use this sequence:
- meet the researcher beside the partly dismantled ancient device;
- follow the direction taken by the Goblins instead of circling the machine;
- clear the groups blocking that route;
- recover the large gear-shaped component;
- return to the original device area;
- install the component;
- stay beside the machine;
- locate and use the remaining control interaction;
- wait for visible activation, dialogue or objective advancement.
The “missing gear” here is a story machine component, not equippable Gear and not a Gear/Karma build problem. For the complete campaign order, use the Chapters 1–8 walkthrough.
Chapter 2 route at a glance
| Phase | Common blocker | Progress signal |
|---|---|---|
| Device meeting | searching around the machine for the missing part | follow the Goblins’ escape direction |
| Recovery route | enemies hold the path | clear the required blocking groups |
| Component pickup | the formal item name is unclear | the large gear-shaped part is recovered |
| Installation | the gear is visible, but nothing else happens | remain in the immediate device area |
| Additional control | the player leaves after the first interaction | use the second available control |
| Activation | the device still looks incomplete | wait for operation, cyan illumination, dialogue or objective change |
The key diagnostic is whether the machine has activated, not whether the component has been installed.
Meet the researcher beside the ancient device
Chapter 2 begins around a partially dismantled ancient mechanism. The researcher explains that part of the machine was removed during study and that Goblins took one of its components.
The local broad walkthrough calls this researcher Alboin. A visible English dialogue label in the source screenshot appears closer to Alvwynn. Because those names conflict, this page does not silently declare one spelling correct. Until the current English client is captured clearly, treat “the researcher beside the ancient device” as the reliable route identifier.
This name uncertainty does not change the objective:
- the machine is missing a large gear-shaped part;
- the Goblins carried it away;
- the part is not hidden around the device platform;
- the party must follow the escape route to recover it.
Finish the researcher’s conversation and allow the objective marker to update before leaving the machine.
Follow the Goblins instead of circling the machine
The missing part is not found by inspecting every side of the dismantled mechanism. The documented route follows the direction in which the Goblins escaped.
Use the active objective as the authority. Move away from the device along the marked route and clear enemy groups that physically block progression. The source does not preserve exact turns, distance, compass direction or a reliable pickup coordinate, so avoid using a copied route that depends on camera orientation.
A fight is likely required when:
- it occurs directly on the active path;
- the party remains locked in combat near the marker;
- the next section cannot be entered while enemies remain;
- defeating the group causes the objective to move.
This is a focused recovery route, not an instruction to clear every Goblin in the surrounding region. Check the objective after each forced group instead of sweeping unrelated side areas.
Recover the large gear-shaped component
The source describes the stolen part by its appearance: it is large and shaped like a gear. Its formal inventory name is not preserved, so “large gear-shaped component” is more accurate than inventing a title.
When you reach the recovery point:
- finish any combat state attached to the pickup area;
- approach the objective-recognized component;
- complete the normal collection interaction;
- wait for the objective to redirect toward the original device;
- return to the researcher and mechanism.
If the objective still points into the Goblin route, check for an unresolved blocking group or incomplete pickup. Do not assume an ordinary equipment item in the inventory is the required part.
Return and install the missing part
Go back to the same ancient device where the Chapter 2 sequence began. Use the available installation interaction to place the recovered component into the machine.
This creates the chapter’s main trap: the installed gear can look like a completed repair, but the mechanism has not necessarily activated. The first interaction restores the missing part. It does not replace the second control step.
After installation:
- do not run back toward the Goblin route;
- do not return to town immediately;
- do not interpret a visible gear as the completion signal;
- remain within the device’s immediate interaction area;
- look for the additional control prompt.
The source does not show the control clearly enough to identify its shape, side of the machine, color or exact button label. Search only the immediate mechanism area rather than using an invented coordinate.
Use the additional control
The additional control is the required second interaction after the gear installation has completed.
A safe procedure is:
- wait until the installation animation and dialogue end;
- rotate the camera around the immediate device platform;
- watch for another story interaction associated with the mechanism;
- approach the prompt without leaving the objective area;
- use the control;
- remain nearby until the machine’s active state and objective update are clear.
Do not describe this as pressing a particular keyboard or controller button. Control prompts vary by input method, and the evidence does not preserve the exact label.
If the second interaction is absent, first check whether the installation truly completed and whether nearby enemies are still holding the area in combat.
How to recognize successful activation
The successful state is stronger than “the gear is installed.” The source screenshot shows the ancient device illuminated with cyan channels or nodes, and visible dialogue states that the device has been activated.
Use a combination of these signals:
- the mechanism begins operating or visibly changes state;
- cyan-lit sections become active;
- dialogue confirms activation;
- the objective advances away from the machine;
- the party receives the next story direction.
A still image confirms illumination and activation dialogue but cannot independently prove continuous movement. For that reason, treat motion as one possible visual sign rather than the only required test. Objective advancement remains the most reliable completion check.
If the ancient device still does nothing
Run through the route in order:
- Correct component: confirm the large gear-shaped quest part was collected.
- Correct machine: return to the original ancient device, not another ruin mechanism.
- Installation completed: wait for the gear placement and dialogue to finish.
- Stay nearby: do not leave after the component appears in position.
- Additional control: search the immediate device area for the remaining interaction.
- Combat state: clear enemies that may prevent interaction.
- Activation feedback: wait for illumination, dialogue or objective movement.
- Current objective: verify that Chapter 2 remains selected rather than an optional activity.
- Patch state: reload the latest checkpoint only after the normal route has been checked.
Do not invent an exact control location or diagnose a bug from the absence of a prompt before confirming installation and combat state.
Missing gear is not an equipment build query
DragonSword uses Gear as a character-progression system, but the Chapter 2 “missing gear” is a physical component of the ancient device. It is not:
- a weapon or armor drop;
- a set bonus;
- a Karma slot;
- an upgrade material for a hero;
- a recommendation about which character to build.
If your problem concerns equippable items and character progression, use the Gear and Karma build guide. This page intentionally keeps that separate search intent from the stolen machine component.
Continue to Chapter 3
When the ancient device activates and the objective advances, continue through the story until the Organa Order and Dragon Cult altar route become active.

Evidence boundary
The primary route source supports the partially dismantled device, the Goblins taking a large gear-shaped component, following their route, clearing blocking groups, recovering and installing the part, remaining beside the device, using an additional control and reaching an activated state.
The activated-device screenshot supports cyan illumination and dialogue confirming activation. It does not show the additional control itself or prove every causal transition. The exact quest title, component name, route turns, pickup coordinate, control appearance, prompt and post-activation objective text remain unverified.
There is also an unresolved English-name conflict: the walkthrough and local broad page use Alboin, while the screenshot label appears to read Alvwynn. Current-build UI evidence is needed before normalizing the NPC name.
