DragonSword: Awakening Co-op Guide โ Player Caps, Modes, and Raids
Updated 2026-07-24
Co-op Modes at a Glance
DragonSword: Awakening is primarily a single-player action RPG, but it includes dedicated co-op content for two types of encounters: Subjugation (normal boss dungeons) and Raids. The developers confirmed that co-op is host-based and limited to selected content โ the official pre-release FAQ did not list story-campaign co-op.
| Mode | Player Cap | Matchmaking |
|---|---|---|
| Subjugation (normal boss dungeons) | 2 players | Steam lobby (random or friends) |
| Raids | 3 players | Steam lobby (random or friends) |
Raids: The 3-Player Core
Raids are the primary endgame co-op activity, supporting up to three players. The original design for the first raid allowed 8 players, but after testing, the team settled on 3 as the most enjoyable experience. According to the May 2026 AMA, future raids may be designed with larger groups in mind, but the currently developed raids are locked to 3 players.
Officially supported boundary: Raids support up to three players. This page has not independently reproduced raid phase structure, scaling or a nine-hero rotation claim in the current build, so those details should not be treated as verified here.
Watch for: The host (the player who creates the lobby) has control over the session. There is no item trading or player-to-player interaction beyond combat. The game uses Steam lobbies, so you can invite friends or join public sessions.
Subjugation (Normal Boss Dungeons)
Subjugation is the 2-player co-op mode. It's designed for normal boss battles, not the story campaign. The developer noted that with 3 or more players, normal boss combat became "too chaotic and hard to follow," so the cap is intentionally low.
Officially supported boundary: Subjugation supports two players. Current farming efficiency, boss scaling and level-gated reward claims require release-build evidence and are not established by the cited pre-release sources.
Watch for: The host-based limitation means if the host disconnects or leaves, the session ends. There is no reconnect feature confirmed at launch. Also, subjugation is not the same as the story dungeons โ those are solo-only.
Matchmaking and Hosting
Both co-op modes use the Steam lobby system. You can either:
- Create a lobby and invite friends.
- Use the live gameโs Steam lobby flow; this page has not independently documented every menu step.
Important notes from the developer:
- No cross-play (PC only via Steam).
- No mod support.
- No player trading or emotes.
- Co-op is limited to the specific modes listed above.
Endgame Co-op Considerations
The endgame revolves around Raids and Subjugation. The AMA confirmed that the initial raid content is designed for 3 players, but the development team is open to larger raids in future updates. However, no specific release cadence for expansions has been promised due to the team's reduced size.
Current boundary: The store confirms Single-player and Online Co-op. This page does not yet have reproducible evidence for solo access to every raid, identical progression rules across modes or faster clears with coordinated teams.
Uncertainty note: The exact number of raid encounters at launch, their difficulty scaling, and any lockout timers (e.g., daily/weekly limits) have not been officially stated. Check current Steam discussions and patch notes for dated reports, and distinguish player observations from official rules.
