DragonSword Awakening Tier List – Launch-Build Team Framework

Updated 2026-07-24

Current tier-list answer

A defensible full 19-hero ranking is not available from the official sources reviewed here. The game launched recently, public materials do not publish comparable damage data for every hero, and unlock conditions are still incomplete.

Instead of inventing an S-to-D list, this page gives you a launch-build evaluation framework and the strongest officially demonstrated team example. It will become a conventional tier list only when comparable release-build testing exists.

For the roster itself, see all DragonSword Awakening characters.

What makes a hero strong in DragonSword?

The game’s combat is built around a party of three heroes, fast switching, Status Ailments and Signal Skills. A useful ranking therefore needs more than solo damage.

Score each hero in these areas:

CriterionWhat to test
Status applicationhow reliably the hero applies Break, Stun, Knockdown, Airborne, Fire or other ailments
Signal Skill accesshow often teammates can trigger the hero’s follow-up
combo extensionwhether the hero continues pressure instead of ending the chain
Super Armor pressurehow well the kit contributes to breaking protected enemies
safety and sustainhealing, range, interruption resistance or defensive utility
mobilityability to reach targets and maintain the route through an encounter
team flexibilitynumber of partners who can use the hero’s ailments effectively
encounter fitperformance against normal groups, Hunt Monsters, Subjugation targets and Raid bosses

A hero can be excellent in one encounter and average in another. That is why one universal tier list can be misleading.

Officially demonstrated core: Castella, Lute and Aria

Hound13’s tag-combo preview shows this chain:

  1. Castella opens with Break and Stun.
  2. Lute follows with Stun and Knockdown.
  3. Aria adds Fire and Airborne using bombs.
  4. Control returns to Castella to continue the offensive sequence.

This is the strongest documented launch reference for team synergy, but it is a developer showcase rather than proof that these three heroes are globally S-tier.

Provisional role tiers

These tiers rank documented functions, not the complete heroes against one another.

Strong documented enablers

  • Castella β€” officially shown opening a chain with Break and Stun.
  • Lute β€” officially shown extending with Stun and Knockdown; his hero introduction also describes healing capability.
  • Aria β€” officially shown adding Fire and Airborne at range with bombs.

Heroes with clear official combat identities

  • Dana β€” magitech gun user with an ice golem companion named Chako.
  • Theresia β€” dual sacred mace user associated with Bleed and Stun.
  • Kalien β€” fire-focused spirit user associated with Stun.
  • Ryza β€” planned post-launch Shock spear user; not part of the current launch roster ranking until shipped.
  • Jerome, Veronica and Logan β€” roadmap heroes with described concepts, not current release-build tier placements.

Not enough comparable evidence

The remaining named heroes should remain unranked until their full kits, unlock state and repeatable performance can be compared in the same build.

Best team-building method right now

Rather than copying a static ranking:

  1. choose an opener who can create Break, Stun or another reliable setup;
  2. add a hero whose Signal Skill or active skills extend that state;
  3. use the third slot for damage, Airborne/Knockdown continuation, healing or encounter-specific utility;
  4. test the same team against a normal group and a boss-style enemy;
  5. record difficulty, equipment, level and patch before calling a result β€œbest.”

The teams guide explains the three-hero framework in more detail, while the combat system guide covers Status Ailments and Signal Skills.

Why launch-week rankings disagree

Early lists often compare heroes under different conditions:

  • different character and equipment levels;
  • incomplete unlock rosters;
  • story exploration versus Subjugation or Raid content;
  • different difficulty settings;
  • short tests with unfamiliar cancel timing;
  • demo behavior mixed with the release build;
  • patch changes after publication.

A useful tier list should disclose those conditions. A list without a build number or test context is an opinion, not a stable ranking.

Tier-list update policy

A hero will receive a firm placement only when there is enough evidence to state:

  • the tested game patch;
  • the hero’s level and equipment context;
  • the encounter type;
  • the team composition;
  • the relevant Status Ailment and Signal Skill interactions;
  • the reason the hero ranks above or below an alternative.

Until that dataset exists, this page prioritizes honest team construction over fabricated precision.
