Launch Roster: What We Know

Looking for DragonSword Awakening all characters? This page is the roster hub. For an evidence-based ranking framework, continue to the launch-build tier list; for party construction, use the teams guide.

For structured, version-stamped records, browse the character database and the Status Ailment database. Current official profiles now include Dana and Ornette, with unsupported build and recruitment claims kept explicit.

DragonSword: Awakening is available on Steam with a roster of heroes you collect and swap between in tag-team combat. The official Steam page confirms 19 heroes are available at launch, each with distinct Status Ailment abilities and Signal Skills.

The roster below combines heroes explicitly named in official material with names verified directly from release-build UI shown in cited creator footage. The source boundary is stated on each entry.

  • Lute โ€“ The protagonist, a young boy traveling toward Orbis. His combat role is shown in the tag combo preview alongside Castella and Aria, where he follows up with Stun and Knockdown.
  • Johnny โ€“ A mercenary who sweeps Lute into his chaotic life.
  • Castella โ€“ An Elf who serves as an assault vanguard, using Break and Stun to shake the front line.
  • Aria โ€“ A firepower-focused hero who stacks Fire and Airborne status effects with bombs.
  • Dana โ€“ The youngest member of the Red Fox Mercenary Crew and a genius alchemist. She wields a magitech gun and summons an ice golem named Chako. Her backstory involves losing color vision in an accident.
  • Theresia โ€“ Named in the Costume DLC list.
  • Ornette โ€“ Named in the Costume DLC list and highlighted by the CEO as a fan-favorite character for her skill utility and visual appeal.
  • Charlotte โ€“ Named in official materials.
  • Reina โ€“ Named in official materials; a swimsuit costume is planned post-launch.
  • Astria โ€“ Named in official materials; a swimsuit costume is planned post-launch.
  • Kalien โ€“ Named in official materials; a costume is hidden in a secret in-game region.
  • Kalsion โ€“ Named in the Costume DLC list and introduced with the Orbis Kingdom group.
  • Cerese โ€“ Commander of the Orbis Magic Knight Order, named in the Orbis Kingdom teaser and Costume DLC list.
  • Alex โ€“ Name verified in the release-build character selection UI; detailed kit and recruitment route remain under verification.
  • Eileen โ€“ Name verified in the release-build character selection UI; detailed kit and recruitment route remain under verification.
  • Roxy โ€“ Name verified in the release-build character selection UI; detailed kit and recruitment route remain under verification.
  • Sion โ€“ Exact spelling verified in the release-build character selection UI; detailed kit and recruitment route remain under verification.
  • Tarte โ€“ Exact spelling verified in the release-build character selection UI; automatic-caption spelling โ€œTartโ€ was rejected.
  • Othell โ€“ Exact spelling verified in a release-build Team 3 screen; automatic-caption โ€œOtellioโ€ and the external-wiki variant โ€œOthelloโ€ were not used as separate characters.

The six release-build UI names above complete the 19-character launch roster without inventing their weapons, Status Ailments, roles, or exact unlock conditions. Creator rankings establish that the menu entries existed; they remain community opinions rather than official balance evidence.

What is unknown: The exact unlock conditions for each hero remain unconfirmed. Official sources describe characters as companions you meet through the story and side content, but whether all 19 are story-unlocked or some require specific quests or exploration is not stated.

Post-Launch Hero Additions

The developers confirmed a post-launch roadmap adding 4 new heroes in the second half of 2026, included in the full version (not paid DLC):

  • Ryza โ€“ First to arrive. A shock-specialized character who throws her spear and teleports to it for fast, stylish combat. She was excluded from the initial roster due to implementation issues.
  • Jerome โ€“ Knockdown specialist. A small character wielding a massive greatsword. Uses Grab up to three stages and can unleash various skills upon Super Armor Destruction.
  • Veronica โ€“ Bare-handed combat + gun. Stun is her primary attribute. She fires a gun at range and engages in martial arts up close.
  • Logan โ€“ Planned tank specialist who attacks with a massive shield and protects allies. His roadmap kit may change before he ships.

What is unknown: The exact release order for Jerome, Veronica, and Logan is still under internal discussion. Ryza is confirmed as the first post-launch addition.

Combat Roles and Tag System

The game uses a tag-team system where you control three heroes and switch between them during combat. Each hero has up to 4 skills (2 active + 2 signal), giving a potential 12 skills in rotation. Some characters also have unique special abilities.

The official combo preview for Lute, Castella, and Aria shows a sample rotation:

  • Castella initiates with Break and Stun.
  • Lute follows with Stun and Knockdown.
  • Aria stacks Fire and Airborne via bombs.
  • Control then passes back to Castella.

What to watch for: The preview demonstrates synergy between status ailments, but it's one example, not a universal rotation. Each hero's specific status ailment effects and how they chain into Signal Skills will require in-game testing to determine optimal combos. The developers note that cancel timing during attacks varies by weapon and attack motion, so combat feel will depend on practice.

How to Unlock Characters

Official sources describe heroes as companions you meet during the main story and through side content such as Hero Quests. The main story runs approximately 20 hours across 8 chapters.

What is unknown: This page still lacks a verified release-build unlock checklist for all 19 heroes. Public achievements confirm several named Hero Quests, including Cerese, Dana, Ornette, Theresia and Kalien, but they do not establish every recruitment condition.

Costume DLC and Familiar Cosmetics

Five costumes are prepared for launch, each with a dedicated weapon costume and toggle options for accessories:

  • Ornette, Cerese, Theresia, Dana, and Kalsion

Post-launch updates will add two swimsuit costumes for Reina and Astria.

What is unknown: Whether additional costume DLC will cover every character. The developers state they have "quite a few costumes prepared" but nothing is finalized.

What Remains Unconfirmed

Several details players commonly ask about are not yet established by official sources:

  • Tier lists and best builds โ€“ Not established by character trailers or pre-release materials. The developers emphasize that each character has a unique playstyle, and finding your fit is part of the fun.
  • Exact unlock conditions โ€“ Not stated for any hero.
  • Optimal rotations โ€“ The tag combo preview shows one example, but it's not a universal recommendation.
  • Purchases โ€“ The checked US Steam store lists the base game at $29.99 and the separate Deluxe Pack at $19.99. Costume and Familiar DLC are also sold separately.
